This brooch is large enough to fasten a heavy cloak or mantle. The style of brooch is called "a ball-type brooch" because of the unique spherical decorations on each end, in this case in the shape of thistles. Strong and sturdy this brooch is solid brass, with a brilliant gold coloured shine.
This brooch is modelled after one in the British Museum found in North Yorkshire. It is dated to the 9th to 10th century and attributed to the Viking culture.
